Long-time Resident Steven Rockey Selected to fill Open Board Seat
The North Beach School District Board of Directors selected Steve Rockey as the newest member of the board from a field of three strong candidates during its regular meeting on Wednesday, April 21.
Rockey fills an opening for director of District 2 which was vacated by Linda Poplin after 15 years of service. Ms. Poplin announced her resignation at the March, 2021 meeting. The board immediately called for candidates for the position and, at the April 21 public meeting, interviewed three applicants: Rockey, Nita Lopez and Nevin Aspinwall.
Rockey has been a resident of the Grays Harbor area for nearly 30 years, where his family had a local business for many years in Ocean Shores. Rockey retired as captain of the Ocean Shores Fire Department, and currently works for the Grays Harbor PUD.
He and his wife, Beth Rockey, are raising two sons who have spent their educational careers to date in the NBSD school system. Beth is also a 20-year employee of the district. As Rockey noted in his application, “We are a family vested in this community.”
Rockey will serve the remainder of the four-year term, which expires December 31, 2021. Appointees may run for election to remain in their appointed position for the next four-year term. The position is one of three that will be open and on the ballot in November, 2021.
