Ms. Marlene Perez

Where are you from? (where did you grow up and where did you last live)

Grew up partially in Los Angeles, Colima MX., and the Columbia River Gorge (BUT I consider myself a Latina gorge girl). Recently moved from the gorge to the beach, this past August.

High school and college experience (what schools you went to, favorite subjects and subjects of study in college)

HS: Columbia High School – Math

College: Portland Community College, Washington State University, and Heritage University – Major was Education, but was interested in psychology.

Years of teaching experience (when you started and what you love about it)

Before being a teacher I was a Bilingual Para-educator. Totaling 14 years in education. Now interning as Principal at Pacific Beach Elementary.

Areas of knowledge (What it is that you teach, what you know about, what you are interested in)

I am currently teaching reading/interning principal at the elementary level. Creating more intentional reading groups and closing the gap for our kiddos.

Words of wisdom (Anything that you would tell the students, life philosophies or advice you would give to them and to anyone)

As a native Spanish speaker and first-generation college graduate, advocating for equity and access are central to me as a public-school educator. My entire career has been focused on supporting every kiddo and working strategically to fill the academic gaps, that at times, prevent some students from attaining grade level proficiency. My life’s goal is to serve; students, families, and community.

Favorite quote:

Every girl, no matter where she lives, deserves the opportunity to develop the promise inside of her. –Michelle Obama
